However, betting on these games is restricted. These two northeastern states are the first in India to regulate online gambling under a license-based regime.
The state has enacted the Sikkim Online Gaming (Regulation) Act, 2008 to introduce a licensing regime for these games. The act lays down the requirements and the form to be submitted by operators to obtain a licence. Operators must have a company registered in India and operate only within Sikkim. A licence can be renewed on yearly basis.
Casinos are also regulated under the Sikkim Casino Laws. It enumerates relevant details including the licensing regime for the casino games in five star hotels.
The Meghalaya Government has recently enacted the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021. This act provides for a licensing regime for both land-based and virtual sports fantasy league games. Similarly, the Tourism Department has a licensing regime for poker.
